The Tamil Nadu portion of the Pulicat lagoon in Tiruvallur district was declared a bird sanctuary in October 1980.

Pulicat Lake, a brackish lagoon on the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu border, is a major wintering ground for flamingos and other waterbirds. The Andhra Pradesh portion was declared a sanctuary in 1976. The Tamil Nadu part, about 60 square kilometres in the Ponneri and Gummidipoondi taluks of Tiruvallur district, was declared a bird sanctuary in October 1980. The lagoon also supports traditional fishing communities.
