Led by Vasudevan Baskaran of Tamil Nadu, India beat Spain 4-3 in the final to win their eighth Olympic hockey gold.

The men's hockey tournament at the 1980 Moscow Olympics was reduced to six teams because of the boycott led by the United States. India, captained by Vasudevan Baskaran of Tamil Nadu, defeated Spain 4-3 in the gold-medal match on 29 July 1980. It was India's record eighth Olympic gold medal in hockey. Baskaran received the Arjuna Award for his performance at the Games.
