· Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary
To shelter blackbuck and vast flocks of waterbirds, a sanctuary was established at Point Calimere on the Palk Strait.
In 1967 the Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary was established at the southeastern extremity of what is now Nagapattinam district, the meeting point of the Palk Strait and the Bay of Bengal. Protecting the blackbuck was its main purpose; an estimated 750 to 800 of the animals lived there in 1967. Great numbers of waterbirds also gather at the site, greater flamingos in particular. The area was subsequently recognised as an Important Bird Area and listed as a Ramsar site.
