Led by Ramanathan Krishnan, India reached the Davis Cup Challenge Round for the first time and lost to Australia.

In the 1966 Davis Cup, India defeated Japan in the Eastern zone final, then beat West Germany and Brazil in the Inter-Zonal rounds. This earned India the right to challenge the defending champions Australia in the Challenge Round, the first time India reached that stage. Australia won the tie, played at Kooyong Stadium in Melbourne on 26 to 28 December 1966. Ramanathan Krishnan led the Indian team, and he was later non-playing captain when Vijay and Anand Amritraj, also of Madras, helped India reach the 1974 final.
