The Madras Presidency Match, a yearly cricket contest between Europeans and Indians also called the Pongal match, started on the final day of 1915.

Buchi Babu Naidu and Percival Partridge had arranged a game between Indian and European cricketers in Madras in 1908-09, but rain forced its abandonment. When the idea was taken up again, the game that started on the last day of 1915 came to be counted as the first Madras Presidency Match. Played every year at Chepauk, normally in mid-January close to Pongal, it was at times known as the Pongal match. Over the series the Indian team was usually the stronger side.
