The opening match of the first Ranji Trophy, India's national first-class cricket championship, was played at Chepauk in Madras.

In February 1934 the Chepauk ground in Madras staged its first Test, and in November 1934 it hosted the very first match of the inaugural Ranji Trophy. The tournament grew into the leading first-class domestic competition in Indian cricket. Known today as the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, the ground is run by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association.
