Chennai Super Kings win their first IPL title
Founded in 2008, the Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians in the final to take their first Indian Premier League title.
When the Indian Premier League began in 2008, the Chennai Super Kings were among its eight original franchises, and at the inaugural player auction they signed M. S. Dhoni, India's captain at the time. Recovering from a poor opening to the 2010 season, they beat Mumbai Indians by 22 runs in the final for their first IPL title. More IPL titles came in 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023, along with the Champions League Twenty20 in 2010 and 2014. Because of the 2013 spot-fixing and betting case, the team was suspended from the IPL between 2015 and 2017. CSK grew into a big part of popular culture in Chennai.
