Coimbatore district was formed by the Company, with Coimbatore town as its headquarters.

Following the Anglo-Mysore Wars, the East India Company acquired the Kongu region, which was attached to the Madras Presidency in 1799. Coimbatore became capital of the new Coimbatore district on 24 November 1804. The district went on to host one of South India's leading textile and engineering hubs. Later districts were formed wholly or partly from its territory, including Nilgiris (1868), Periyar or Erode (1979) and Tiruppur (2009).
