Village Settlement revenue experiment

· Tiruchirappalli

A Village Settlement system of land revenue was tried in several Tamil districts before ryotwari became the norm.

When revenue from existing arrangements fell short of expectations, the Company introduced a system known as the Village Settlement. Between 1804 and 1814 it was applied in the districts of Tinnevelly, Trichinopoly, Coimbatore, North Arcot and South Arcot. Under it, revenue was assessed on villages as a whole and collected through village heads or leaseholders. The experiment was abandoned in favour of the ryotwari system associated with Thomas Munro.
