The Maruthu brothers issued a proclamation calling on all people of the peninsula, whatever their religion, to fight the British.

During the Second Polygar War the Maruthu brothers of Sivaganga issued a proclamation addressed to the people of Jambudweepa, meaning peninsular South India. It urged Hindus, Muslims and Christians alike to unite and resist the East India Company. The proclamation was put up at Tiruchirappalli and at the Srirangam temple. It is often cited in Tamil Nadu as one of the earliest calls for united resistance to British rule in India.
