Fall of Panchalankurichi fort

· Panchalankurichi

After a lengthy siege and heavy shelling, Colonel Agnew's Company troops took the rebuilt fort of Panchalankurichi.

In February 1801 Oomaithurai, younger brother of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, broke out of prison and raised the Panchalankurichi fort again, though it had been demolished in 1799. Colonel Agnew led Company forces against it, and after a drawn-out siege and bombardment they took the fort in May 1801. Oomaithurai got away and went to Kalayar Kovil, where he joined the Maruthu brothers. The British then levelled the fort.
