One year after Kattabomman was executed, a broad coalition of Tamil palayakkarars and their allies revolted against the East India Company.

The First Polygar War had been put down in 1799, yet in 1800 revolt spread once more through the southern Tamil country. Joining forces were the Maruthu brothers of Sivaganga, Oomaithurai of Panchalankurichi and chiefs from the Kongu region, who also had ties with Pazhassi Raja in Malabar. Company troops waged a long campaign, seizing Panchalankurichi in May 1801 and then, in October 1801, the forest stronghold of Kalayar Kovil. With the rising crushed, the palayakkarars' military strength was broken and direct British rule over the region became possible.
