Tamil Nadu and Kerala agreed that the Siruvani dam in Kerala would supply drinking water to Coimbatore.

In August 1973 the governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala executed an agreement for drinking water supply to Coimbatore and neighbouring areas from the Siruvani River. The dam lies in Palakkad district of Kerala, so the project was built by the Kerala Public Works Department with funds provided by Tamil Nadu. Siruvani water became one of the main drinking water sources of Coimbatore city. The arrangement is an example of inter-state water sharing in the Western Ghats.
