Prime Minister Nehru inaugurated the Aliyar Dam, part of the inter-state Parambikulam-Aliyar irrigation project.

The Aliyar Dam across the Aliyar river near Pollachi was built between 1959 and 1969, mainly for irrigation. It was inaugurated on 2 October 1962 by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, with Chief Minister K. Kamaraj presiding. It forms part of the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project, a group of dams shared with Kerala that diverts west-flowing rivers to the dry Coimbatore region. The dams of the project are operated by Tamil Nadu under an agreement with Kerala.
