The Amaravathi Dam was built across the Amaravathi river near Udumalpet for irrigation and flood control.

The Amaravathi Dam was built in 1957 across the Amaravathi river, a tributary of the Kaveri, near Udumalpet during K. Kamaraj's administration. It was built mainly for irrigation and flood control in the western districts. The reservoir lies within what later became the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary. It was one of a series of irrigation projects completed in the state in the 1950s.
