Work was completed on the Bhavanisagar Dam over the Bhavani river, the first major irrigation project of independent India.

Started in 1948, the Lower Bhavani Project was the first large irrigation scheme taken up in independent India. Its earthen dam at Bhavanisagar, on the Bhavani river in what is now Erode district, was finished by 1955 and brought into use in 1956. Extensive farmland in the western districts receives water from it. The Madras government built it as one element of a broader irrigation programme during the 1950s.
