Al Ummah formed in Coimbatore

· Coimbatore

Al Ummah, a militant group founded in Coimbatore by Syed Ahmed Basha, was banned after the 1998 Coimbatore bombings.

Syed Ahmed Basha set up Al Ummah in Coimbatore in 1993, one year on from the Babri Masjid demolition. The group drew attention following a 1993 bomb explosion at the RSS office in Chennai that left 11 people dead. Its members threw country-made bombs at the home of director Mani Ratnam in 1995, after his film Bombay came out. The Tamil Nadu government outlawed the organisation for its role in the serial bombings in Coimbatore in 1998.
