Mani Ratnam's Roja, the first film scored by A. R. Rahman, was released and its soundtrack transformed Indian film music.

Roja, a Tamil romantic thriller directed by Mani Ratnam, was released on 15 August 1992. It marked the debut of A. R. Rahman as a film composer, after Mani Ratnam chose him instead of his regular collaborator Ilaiyaraaja. The soundtrack, including the song 'Chinna Chinna Aasai', became hugely popular across India, and dubbed versions of the film reached a national audience. Rahman went on to become one of the most influential composers in Indian cinema.
