A landmine attack by the sandalwood smuggler Veerappan near Palar killed 22 members of a police and forest team from Tamil Nadu.

After Veerappan killed a suspected informer at Govindapadi near Mettur, a team of police and forest officials was sent to investigate. On 9 April 1993 landmines were detonated beneath two vehicles carrying the team at Palar, near the Male Mahadeshwara Hills on the Karnataka side of the border. The blast killed 22 people and was Veerappan's single largest mass killing. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka had formed a Special Task Force against him in 1992, and the pursuit continued until he was killed in 2004.
