Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed by an LTTE suicide bomber at an election rally in Sriperumbudur.

On 21 May 1991 former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber while campaigning at Sriperumbudur, near Madras, during the 1991 general election. The bomber, a member of the LTTE, and several bystanders and police personnel were also killed. Polling in Tamil Nadu was postponed to 15 June 1991. The assassination produced a wave of sympathy for the Congress and its ally the AIADMK, turned Indian opinion sharply against the LTTE, and led to a long investigation and trial.
