V. N. Janaki became Tamil Nadu's first woman Chief Minister, but her ministry was dismissed within weeks and President's rule followed.

After MGR's death the AIADMK split between a faction backing his widow V. N. Janaki and one led by J. Jayalalithaa. Janaki Ramachandran was sworn in as Chief Minister on 7 January 1988, becoming the first woman to hold the post in Tamil Nadu. A confidence vote in the assembly was marked by disorder, and the Union government dismissed her ministry later that month and imposed President's rule. President's rule continued until the assembly election of January 1989, and the AIADMK's two leaves symbol was frozen during the split.
