During the Emergency the Union government dismissed the DMK ministry and imposed President's rule in Tamil Nadu.
On 31 January 1976, during the Emergency, the Union government dismissed the DMK government of M. Karunanidhi and imposed President's rule in Tamil Nadu, dissolving the Assembly. The dismissal followed allegations of corruption raised by M. G. Ramachandran and others. Many DMK leaders and workers were detained, including M. K. Stalin under MISA, and party member C. Chittibabu died in prison. President's rule continued until the AIADMK formed a government after the 1977 election.
