After the DMK government's dismissal, many party workers including M. K. Stalin were jailed in Madras Central Prison under MISA.

After President's rule was imposed on Tamil Nadu in January 1976, many DMK leaders and workers were detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency. Among them was M. K. Stalin, son of M. Karunanidhi, who was held in Madras Central Prison. Stalin was tortured in custody, and his fellow prisoner C. Chittibabu died as a result of the abuse. They were released when the Emergency ended in 1977, and the Ismail Commission later inquired into conditions in the jail.
