The Jayalalithaa government opened police stations run entirely by women to handle complaints from women, starting in Chennai.

During J. Jayalalithaa's first term, Tamil Nadu set up police stations operated solely by women, with the first opening in Chennai in 1992. The stations were meant to make it easier for women to report crimes and to respond to sexual offences against women. The government also introduced a 30 percent quota for women in police jobs and established 57 all-women police stations during that term. By 2022 the state had 202 all-women police stations.
