Women first recruited into the Tamil Nadu Police
· Chennai

The first batch of women police, a sub-inspector, a head constable and 20 constables, was recruited in Tamil Nadu in 1973.
Proposals to recruit women into the Madras Police had been made as early as 1919 and again in 1955, but were not acted upon. In 1973, under the Karunanidhi government, the state recruited its first batch of women police, consisting of one sub-inspector, one head constable and 20 police constables. Women's presence in the force later grew substantially. In the 1990s the state set up all-women police stations.
