K. Maya Thevar won the Dindigul by-election, giving the newly formed AIADMK its first electoral victory.

A by-election to the Dindigul Lok Sabha constituency was held in 1973, months after the founding of the AIADMK. The AIADMK candidate K. Maya Thevar won, becoming the party's first member elected to the Lok Sabha. The DMK and Congress candidates were defeated. The result was widely seen as a demonstration of M. G. Ramachandran's popular support.
