Thirumangalam by-election

· Thirumangalam

The DMK won the Thirumangalam assembly by-election on a turnout of about 89 percent, amid allegations of cash being paid for votes.

A by-election to the Thirumangalam assembly constituency near Madurai was held on 9 January 2009, and the result was declared on 12 January. The DMK candidate Latha Athiyaman defeated the AIADMK, on a turnout of about 89 percent. M. K. Alagiri, who led the DMK campaign in the Madurai region, was credited with the win. Alagiri was accused of initiating cash-for-vote practices in the by-election, and the contest became a reference point in later debates on vote buying in Tamil Nadu.
