Self-immolation of K. Muthukumar

· Chennai

Journalist K. Muthukumar set himself on fire in Chennai in protest against the killing of Tamil civilians in the Sri Lankan war.

K. Muthukumar, a young journalist, set himself on fire outside the Shastri Bhavan central government offices in Chennai on 29 January 2009. He left a statement criticising the Indian government's stance on the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war, in which large numbers of Tamil civilians were being killed. His death set off protests by students, lawyers and political groups across Tamil Nadu. Several other people later died by self-immolation over the same issue.
