The AIADMK-led alliance won the 1977 assembly election and M. G. Ramachandran was sworn in as Chief Minister.

The 1977 Tamil Nadu assembly election, held after a period of President's rule, was a four-cornered contest between the AIADMK-led front, the DMK, the Congress and the Janata Party. The AIADMK-led alliance won 144 of the 234 seats. M. G. Ramachandran, the film star who had founded the AIADMK in 1972 after leaving the DMK, was sworn in as Chief Minister on 30 June 1977. It was the first time the AIADMK formed a government, and he would remain Chief Minister, apart from a brief interruption in 1980, until his death in 1987.
