A DMK-led alliance defeated the Congress, ending Congress rule in Madras State; Kamaraj lost his own seat.

In the 1967 Madras Legislative Assembly election, the DMK-led front including the Swatantra Party and other parties defeated the Indian National Congress. The DMK alone won 137 seats, and the alliance won 179. Former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj lost in Virudhunagar to DMK student leader P. Seenivasan by 1,285 votes.
