Prohibition suspended in Tamil Nadu

· Chennai

The Karunanidhi government suspended prohibition and permitted the sale of arrack and toddy, before stopping it again in 1974.

Tamil Nadu had followed total prohibition since soon after independence while many other states relaxed it. On 30 August 1971 the DMK government led by M. Karunanidhi suspended prohibition and allowed the sale of arrack and toddy, citing revenue needs. The decision was opposed by C. Rajagopalachari and others. The same government stopped the sale of these drinks again in 1974.
