Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme announced

· Chennai

State employees were promised an assured pension of half their last-drawn pay by the Stalin government, a scheme close to the old pension.

Employee associations had long demanded a return to the Old Pension Scheme when, in January 2026, the Tamil Nadu government unveiled the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS) for its employees and teachers. Under TAPS, retirees are guaranteed 50 percent of their final month's pay as pension, revised in step with dearness allowance. The government meets the cost beyond the employees' own contribution of 10 percent of salary. According to officials, the pension rules needed amending first, and implementation was planned for 2027.
