TASMAC established to handle liquor trade
· Chennai
Formed by the M. G. Ramachandran government, the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) handled wholesale liquor trade whenever prohibition was lifted.
Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran's government created the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) in 1983. Prohibition had a long record in Tamil Nadu: it was partly brought in during 1937 and was repeatedly withdrawn and restored. From 1983 onward, whenever it was withdrawn, TASMAC controlled the wholesale side of the liquor business in the state. In 2003 the corporation became the only retail seller of alcohol in Tamil Nadu, and it grew into a large contributor to state revenue.
