Tamil Nadu bans the sale of lotteries

· Chennai

The Jayalalithaa government banned the sale of all lotteries in Tamil Nadu, including those run by agencies from other states.

On 8 January 2003 the Tamil Nadu government banned the sale of all forms of lottery tickets by agencies from within and outside the state. The order was issued under Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. It affected a large lottery trade in the state, including the business of the lottery operator Santiago Martin. The ban was retained by later governments, although tickets of Kerala and other state lotteries were later reported to be sold in the state.
