Self-Respect marriages given legal validity
· Chennai

The Hindu Marriage (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967 became law, legalising marriages performed without priests or Vedic rituals.
The Annadurai government introduced an amendment to the Hindu Marriage Act to recognise Self-Respect marriages, a form promoted by Periyar that dispenses with priests and religious rites. The bill was passed by both houses of the state legislature and received presidential assent on 17 January 1968. It was published in the Gazette on 20 January 1968 and became law. Marriages solemnised in this way thereby gained legal validity.
