Official Languages (Amendment) Act guarantees bilingualism

· New Delhi

Amid fresh protests in Madras State, Parliament amended the 1963 Act to ensure English would continue in use alongside Hindi.

Introduced in Parliament on 27 November 1967, the Official Languages (Amendment) Bill was passed on 16 December 1967. The President gave assent on 8 January 1968, and the law took effect. By changing section 3 of the 1963 Act, it secured what has been described as a virtual indefinite policy of bilingualism, under which both Hindi and English are used for the Union's official business. Students in Madras State had renewed their protests in late 1967, demanding firmer guarantees.
