Statues of Tamil poets and scholars, including Kambar, Bharathiyar and Robert Caldwell, were unveiled on Marina Beach for the World Tamil Conference.

In January 1968 a series of statues of figures of Tamil literature was erected along the Marina Beach promenade in Madras to mark the World Tamil Conference held in the city. Those unveiled on 2 January 1968 included statues of the poet Kambar, the poet Subramania Bharati and the missionary scholar Robert Caldwell. The statues became a permanent feature of the beach road, later named Kamaraj Salai. A statue of Kannagi, the heroine of Silappatikaram, also stands on the beach.
