A 133-foot stone statue of the poet Thiruvalluvar was unveiled on a rock off Kanyakumari on the millennium day.

The Thiruvalluvar Statue, a stone sculpture of the author of the Thirukkural, stands on a small island off Kanyakumari next to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. Its combined height with the pedestal is 133 feet, representing the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural. The project was announced by M. Karunanidhi in his 1990 budget and resumed after the DMK returned to power in 1996. The statue, designed by sculptor V. Ganapati Sthapati, was unveiled by Karunanidhi on 1 January 2000.
