Francis Chantrey's bronze equestrian statue of Governor Thomas Munro was ceremonially opened on the Island in Madras.

After Thomas Munro died in 1827, a public subscription in Madras raised funds for a statue. The sculptor Francis Chantrey completed the bronze in 1834. It was shipped to India in three parts and set on a granite plinth on the Island in Madras. The statue was ceremonially opened on 23 October 1839. Because the horse has no saddle or stirrups, it is sometimes called the Stirrupless Majesty.
