Frederic Tudor built the Ice House facing the sea at Madras to store ice shipped from America; it is now Vivekanandar Illam.

In 1842 the American ice merchant Frederic Tudor built a storehouse facing the Bay of Bengal at Madras. It held ice brought by ship from America. The ice business collapsed in 1880 and the building was bought by Biligiri Iyengar, who renamed it Castle Kernan. Swami Vivekananda stayed there in February 1897. In 1963 the Tamil Nadu government renamed it Vivekanandar Illam.
