A group of four law students and two teachers, known as the Triplicane Six, launched The Hindu in Madras on 20 September 1878 as a weekly. G. Subramania Iyer and M. Veeraraghavachariar were two of the founders and served as early editors. In 1889 it began appearing daily. The paper went on to become a prominent English-language organ of nationalist thought in South India.
