A government preparatory school opened in Madras in 1840; it grew into the High School and eventually Presidency College.

E. B. Powell was headmaster when a government preparatory school began classes on 16 October 1840 in rented premises at Egmore. Under the Madras University scheme a high school department followed in April 1841, and that year the institution shifted to Popham's Broadway. In time it became Presidency College, Madras, which was one of two Presidency Colleges the British established in India. The college was affiliated to the University of Madras once the university came into existence in 1857.
