A medical school was opened in Madras that grew into Madras Medical College, one of the oldest in Asia.

Madras Medical College traces its origins to a medical school established on 2 February 1835. It began by training Indian and Anglo-Indian students as medical subordinates for the Company's services, attached to the General Hospital. It later grew into a full medical college and was among the first in India to admit women students in the 1870s. It remains one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia.
