Bharathidasan, the rationalist Tamil poet influenced by Subramania Bharati and Periyar, died in Madras.

Bharathidasan, born K. Subburathinam in Pondicherry in 1891, died in Madras on 21 April 1964. He took his pen name from his admiration for Subramania Bharati and was closely associated with Periyar's Self-Respect Movement. His poetry dealt with social and political issues, Tamil identity and rationalism, and was widely used by the Dravidian movement. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award posthumously for his play Pisiraandhaiyaar.
