The Madras government nationalised the writings of poet Subramania Bharati, the first such step for any poet in India.

In 1949 the government of Madras acquired the rights to the works of the nationalist poet Subramania Bharati and placed them in the public domain. Bharati, who died in 1921, had written patriotic and reformist poetry in Tamil, including Panjali Sabatham and Kuyil Paatu. His poems are described as the first literary works to be nationalised in India. The move made his writing freely available for publication and helped establish him as a central figure of modern Tamil literature.
