Land ceiling reduced to 15 standard acres

· Chennai

A 1970 Tamil Nadu law halved the family land ceiling, cutting it from 30 to 15 standard acres.

Tamil Nadu's Land Reforms (Reduction of Ceiling on Land) Act, 1970, numbered Act No. 17 of 1970, amended the state's 1961 land ceiling law. For a family of no more than five members, the permitted holding of agricultural land fell from 30 standard acres to 15. The intention was to free more surplus land for the landless. This lower ceiling stayed the foundation of land reform in Tamil Nadu.
