Ford enters India with plant near Chennai
Ford re-entered India through a joint venture with Mahindra and set up its main car plant at Maraimalai Nagar near Chennai.
Ford Motor Company re-entered the Indian market in October 1995 through Mahindra Ford India Limited, a joint venture with Mahindra and Mahindra. The company chose Maraimalai Nagar, about 45 km from Chennai, for its main manufacturing plant. Together with Hyundai and component makers, Ford's arrival helped turn the Chennai region into a major automobile manufacturing hub, often called the 'Detroit of Asia'. Ford stopped manufacturing in India in 2021.
