BMW opens its car plant near Chennai

BMW Group Plant Chennai began operations, adding a luxury carmaker to the automobile cluster around the city.

BMW India began operations in January 2007, with its manufacturing plant located in Chennai. BMW Group Plant Chennai, in Mahindra World City, started operations on 29 March 2007. The plant went on to assemble a wide range of BMW models and the MINI Countryman for the Indian market. It added to the cluster of automobile makers, including Hyundai, Renault-Nissan and Ashok Leyland, that led Chennai to be called the Detroit of Asia.
