· Chennai
Six days of continuous northeast monsoon rain caused the Cooum and Adyar rivers to overflow, flooding slums across Madras.
In October 1943 continuous rain lasting more than six days fell on Madras during the northeast monsoon. The Coovum and Adyar rivers overflowed and flooded neighbouring residential areas. The worst damage was to slums along the Coovum, including those in Chintadripet, Choolaimedu, Perambur and Kondithope, and displaced residents took refuge in the Ripon Building. Casualties were reported in Medavakkam, Perambur and Purasawalkam, and police used boats and catamarans to rescue people.
