Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board given statutory status

· Chennai

Set up in 1969, the TWAD Board was made a statutory body in charge of water supply and sewerage everywhere outside Madras.

In 1969 the Government of Tamil Nadu created the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, initially without statutory backing. A law passed by the state legislature then gave it statutory status with effect from 14 April 1971. Its remit covers water supply and sewerage schemes throughout Tamil Nadu, with the exception of Chennai. Planning and carrying out drinking water projects in both rural and urban areas became its responsibility.
